I’ve always had a fascination for seagulls. My childhood paradise was by the shore in Tysfjord (where Norway is at its narrowest…)For me the seagulls represent summer, happiness and peace (even though they’re definitely no peaceful birds…) One of my strongest nature experiences ever was when I, as a little girl was allowed to watch the seagull chicks coming out of the eggs. We were peeking through a hole in a wall, so we didn’t disturb the birds:)

Gulls flock

The flock of seagulls was painted in 2009, and hung on the wall in the entrance of my law firm for more than five years. When I decided to quit the firm, and become an artist, a fellow lawyer, confessed that she had been dreaming about this painting, so she bought it to have at her cottage:)

Seagull in the wind

Seagull in the wind – My first seagull

This is the first seagull I ever painted. It was meant to be part of a flock, but as soon as it was painted, it was obvious that it had to be alone…

Sometimes I prefer only to give a part of the picture, and let the viewer imagine the rest. My desire is that the viewers afterwards should be uncertain as to what they’ve actually seen, and what they’ve just imagined…

Gulls nest

Gulls nest – detail

This is one of my favorite seagull paintings!

A seagull’s nest may seem abandoned, but if you have the guts to try to take a closer look, you’ll soon discover that the gulls don’t leave their chicks behind… The parents will protect the nest by “shit missiles”; they’ll come flying in an horrendous speed, and almost touch your head, but then rise in a split second, only to leave you with a huge shit in the back of your head! It’s definitely not to be recommended!

On the hunt – detail

Seagulls are the friends and allies of the fishermen. When we go fishing and you see lots of seagulls in one area, you can be sure that that’s the right place to throw out the line…

Gull chicks

Gulls chicks

When the chicks have outgrown the nest they are often seen wandering around in the foreshore. They’re almost invisible alone among the stones, but the parents are never far away, and always have the shit missiles ready for you if you dare come too close…

Seagulls are beautiful and elegant – and incredible noisy:) The load screeching GAIA, GAIA, GAIA! can drive people mad! But when you are by the shore and hear it in its right environment it’s quite relaxing…
